The closed version of the petals needed to be smoother and large enough to curl around the soft serve ice cream. My open/closed tests helped me to determine a more correct proportion between the petals and the ice cream centerpiece.

I tested my model to ensure that the petals were large enough to enclose the soft serve at the beginning of my blooming animation. The opened version needed to be more wrinkled and small enough to fit within the bottom portion of the frame.

My petals began simply, box modeled like the soft serve. I started by making the basic shape with extrudes, subdividing, editing/sculpting, and repeating the process until I reached an appropriate level of refinement. I copied the first petal to make the second and third, and tweaked the other petals with the sculpt tool to differentiate them.

Smoothed and polished, this was my final model, which, after my critique, only required minor tweaks.

Working out my soft serve more fully, I placed the other objects around it. Since my design was more "fantasy realism" than full adherence to reality, my modeling didn't require an intense amount of detail. Most of my additional models (the cherries, piroulines, and sprinkles) were simple to make, but most of my time was spent in their placement within the composition.

I finally returned to the tried-and-true method of box modeling. A few well-placed extrudes and a few hours with the sculpt tool brought the model much closer to what I intended it to be.

It took me a few tries before I found the easiest way of making my soft serve. As evidenced here, I tried extruding a shape along a curve in order to achieve the spiral shape of the ice cream piled on top of itself. However, this method proved ineffective since it would cause problems with inner-penetration and require a lot more work to fix than was really worth it.
